The subtle visual effects and astoundingly well done score only help add to the greatness. Aronofsky also deserves recognition for the film's lean running time.
When so many films are often far too long and dragged out, this film maintains a sense of momentum that never gets lost at any point. The film's slow points are never dragged out, merely well padded out for the shift from Nina being innocent to adrenaline soaked horror as she descends into the realm of darkness.
Rather gracefully, Aronofsky manages to balance the goal of Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin's script to blend Nina's tale with the story of Swan Lake itself, and never loses sight or direction at any instance.
This is bravado style filmmaking at its finest, and more than suggests that the brilliant direction in Requiem for a Dream was not a fluke.
Portman, who has shown her acting merits before in the likes of Closer, delivers a startlingly intense and beautiful performance as Nina.
At once you can see the innocent, sexually repressed little girl who just wants to please her mother, and the sexually depraved fallen angel, inching closer towards independence and adulthood.
She is very clearly not "well" in the beginning of the film, and as the film progresses, you can practically chart her degree reversal in character.
She is downright terrifying in many instances, and more than proves her worth as an actress. When she finally dons makeup late in the film, her transformation from a once promising talent to a full blown powerhouse talent becomes simply marvelous to watch.
The supporting cast only helps to further complement Portman's extraordinary performance. Cassel is amazing as always as the slimy and twisted Thomas.
We never really get more than hints at his true intentions, but Cassel makes every moment on-screen simply amazing.
Kunis delivers a level of depth I never thought was possible for her. She commands the screen with every new scene, and this performance will easily act as a starmaking role for her.
Hershey is even better; practically stealing the screen away from Portman's magnetizing performance. She makes Erica into that monster of a character everyone loves to hate, and brings a level of intensity to every mere moment she appears in.
If anyone is even nearly close to equaling Portman's performance, it would be her. Despite only appearing for a few minutes, Winona Ryder is amazing in her role as the former lead ballerina Beth.
I just wish she could have chewed up more scenery. Black Swan is an incredible film from beginning to end, and will not easily leave you.

We learn some of the girls have been killed while others are still alive but trapped in the academy gone berserk.
OK, we've seen this same tale before yet I was intrigued enough to continue. On the plus side, the background music is part of the original score of the ballet.
The scenery in and around the school is very well crafted. As to game play itself, this is not a venture for beginners, something I personally admire.
The hidden object segments are some of the toughest seen in quite some time. Lots of items are hard to find although it has nothing to do with their being too obscure or too small.
They are well placed, "hidden in plain sight" as I generally refer to such items. There is some interactivity.
As to puzzles, the best also have some hidden object aspect to them. One of the weird occurrences in HO scenes are things that morph, yet they have nothing to do with gameplay.
I found no collectibles during the trial. Here is what prevents me from making this a 5 star effort. When an area need to be investigated, the cursor turns into opera glasses and they are very small.
I have good eyesight and found the change to be often hard to discern. I imagine players with some sight difficulties might discover this is problematic.
There are black clouds to dissolve by matching a rune displayed within the cloud. Again the rune that needs matching is very much obscured by the cloud.
I found the cursor to be a tad clunky, particularly when using a hint. The absolutely best this game offers is its challenge.
Having some things really hard to see knocks Black Swan down a peg. For me, it's a game I'd acquire with a free game code.
However when you arrive at the school you must confront several areas of dark energy that hamper your progress.
Soon you encounter the ghost of Angelina who begs you to help free her and others from the dark energy that has overrun the school and imprisoned its residents.
The graphics are good but not excellent because of the mistiness that was used to create the scenes. The game only offers three basic modes of gameplay without the custom mode being included.
The voiceovers are exceptionally good as is the entire sound package including the ambient effects and particularly the music that is based on some familiar classical ballet themes.
Your tools include a mirror that is given to you by Angelina to help you find her memories that will lead you through your investigation.
The mirror will be used to dispel the dark energy fields that are found in almost every area of the game. As with other gimmicky tools in a game, we must play a matching puzzle to dispel the fields.
I found it very hard to determine what symbols needed to be matched since they are hiding within those dark, smoky energy fields. My favorite tool is the journal that tells the complete story as you move through the game.
I hated it when devs stopped using the journal and made all of the notes connected to video replay that I think is nothing more than a method they use as a shortcut.
I am one who enjoys reading the dialog and often checking back in the journal to find helpful information. The other tool is an integrated, transporter type map.
Most of the HOS are the traditional list type but the devs used a very tiny white font which makes it very hard to read.
Coupled with a list that is hard to read, the items to find are very difficult to spot with some of them being so tiny that they are often unrecognizable.
You will visit each HOS more than once I know some gamers do not like that but the next time the scenes contain silhouettes, which in this case makes the items easier to find than reading them from the list.
The silhouette scenes are the progressive interactive type where you will use one item to find another. In the list type HOS you can play a match 3 type game rather than search for items and that might be easier for many who have difficulty with the list.
The game has far more HOS than mini-games and then the minis seem easy. Although the game is very HOS heavy it is perfect for me since I enjoy the genre and think that this is far better than some other than the major CE releases.
Yes the storyline has been over-used but I like the way it is presented in Black Swan. I am a huge fan of the ballet so that gives me another reason to enjoy this game.
I realize that this is not a game everyone will love and enjoy as much as I do so please try the demo to see if Black Swan is a game you will enjoy.
Rated 4 out of 5 by underwriter from So Beautiful OK, I haven't finished the game yet, but I wanted to weigh in before too much time goes by.
I am enchanted by the graphics, particularly of inanimate objects the people are a little different and will finish this game, even if it makes me completely crazy with glitches but there have been none as yet and being picky about cursor placement I have had some of that and games with no instructions at least I couldn't find any, and that's the only reason for any fours instead of fives.
The graphics are reminding me of the graphics in the first two Haunted Manor and the first Witch Hunters, which I loved so much, I think I cried when the dev decided to go more mainstream.
There is also a resemblance to the Dream Chronicles series graphics. So if you are loving the graphics and want more, those are places to look if you haven't already.
I am not a big fan of morphing objects, but in HOPs I don't mind them, and I think these are well done. I'm not going to be any more specific; I think those who have, have done a good job.
Besides, I want to get back to playing it rather than talking about it. The Big Fish Guarantee: Quality tested and virus free. No ads, no adware, no spyware.

Taleb's black swan is different from the earlier philosophical versions of the problem, specifically in epistemology , as it concerns a phenomenon with specific empirical and statistical properties which he calls, "the fourth quadrant".
Taleb's problem is about epistemic limitations in some parts of the areas covered in decision making. These limitations are twofold: philosophical mathematical and empirical human known epistemic biases.
The philosophical problem is about the decrease in knowledge when it comes to rare events as these are not visible in past samples and therefore require a strong a priori , or an extrapolating theory; accordingly predictions of events depend more and more on theories when their probability is small.
In the fourth quadrant, knowledge is uncertain and consequences are large, requiring more robustness. According to Taleb, thinkers who came before him who dealt with the notion of the improbable, such as Hume , Mill , and Popper focused on the problem of induction in logic, specifically, that of drawing general conclusions from specific observations.
The central and unique attribute of Taleb's black swan event is that it is high-profile. His claim is that almost all consequential events in history come from the unexpected — yet humans later convince themselves that these events are explainable in hindsight.
One problem, labeled the ludic fallacy by Taleb, is the belief that the unstructured randomness found in life resembles the structured randomness found in games.
This stems from the assumption that the unexpected may be predicted by extrapolating from variations in statistics based on past observations, especially when these statistics are presumed to represent samples from a normal distribution.
These concerns often are highly relevant in financial markets, where major players sometimes assume normal distributions when using value at risk models, although market returns typically have fat tail distributions.
Taleb said "I don't particularly care about the usual. If you want to get an idea of a friend's temperament, ethics, and personal elegance, you need to look at him under the tests of severe circumstances, not under the regular rosy glow of daily life.
Can you assess the danger a criminal poses by examining only what he does on an ordinary day? Can we understand health without considering wild diseases and epidemics?
Indeed the normal is often irrelevant. Almost everything in social life is produced by rare but consequential shocks and jumps; all the while almost everything studied about social life focuses on the 'normal,' particularly with 'bell curve' methods of inference that tell you close to nothing.
Because the bell curve ignores large deviations, cannot handle them, yet makes us confident that we have tamed uncertainty. More generally, decision theory , which is based on a fixed universe or a model of possible outcomes, ignores and minimizes the effect of events that are "outside the model".
Consequently, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq exchange remained closed till September 17, , the most protracted shutdown since the Great Depression.
Taleb notes that other distributions are not usable with precision, but often are more descriptive, such as the fractal , power law , or scalable distributions and that awareness of these might help to temper expectations.
Beyond this, he emphasizes that many events simply are without precedent, undercutting the basis of this type of reasoning altogether.
Taleb also argues for the use of counterfactual reasoning when considering risk. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theory of response to surprise events.

Columbia University. The Financial Times. The director had also seen numerous productions of Swan Lake , and he connected the duality of the White Swan and the Black Swan to the script.
Regardless, the director found active and inactive dancers to share their experiences with him. Aronofsky called Black Swan a companion piece to his previous film The Wrestler , recalling one of his early projects about a love affair between a wrestler and a ballerina.
He eventually separated the wrestling and the ballet worlds as "too much for one movie". He compared the two films: "Wrestling some consider the lowest art—if they would even call it art—and ballet some people consider the highest art.
But what was amazing to me was how similar the performers in both of these worlds are. They both make incredible use of their bodies to express themselves.
Aronofsky first discussed with Portman the possibility of a ballet film in , and he found she was interested in playing a ballet dancer.
Kunis contrasted Lily with Nina, "My character is very loose She's not as technically good as Natalie's character, but she has more passion, naturally.
That's what [Nina] lacks. He compared his character to George Balanchine , who co-founded New York City Ballet and was "a control freak, a true artist using sexuality to direct his dancers".
Portman and Kunis started training six months before the start of filming in order to attain a body type and muscle tone more similar to those of professional dancers.
A few months closer to filming, she began choreography training. You wear a tutu and you stand on stage and you look cute and twirl. But this is very different because you can't fake it.
You can't just stay in there and like pretend you know what you're doing. Your whole body has to be structured differently. She stated: "Natalie took class, she studied for several months, from the waist up is her.
In addition to the soloist performances, members of the Pennsylvania Ballet were cast as the corps de ballet , backdrop for the main actors' performances.
Aronofsky and Portman first discussed a ballet film in , after the release of Requiem for a Dream , though the script had not yet been written.
The screenplay The Understudy was written by Andres Heinz; Aronofsky first heard about it while editing his second film Requiem for a Dream and described it as " All About Eve with a double, set in the off-Broadway world.
In July , Kunis was cast. Principal photography was achieved using Super 16 mm cameras and began in New York City toward the end of I like Super 16 because the cameras are really light, really moveable.
Also, for The Wrestler it was a money-saving thing. The film stocks on 35mm would become so glossy that they'd get close to what people are doing on video.
Like with wrestling, ballet is shot in wide shot with two shots on the side, and no one really brought the camera—well, wrestling—into the ring or for us, onto the stage and into the practice room.
I couldn't think of another example where they did that I was concerned if that would affect the suspense, but after a while I said, "screw it, let's go for it.
The non-original music featured in Black Swan consists of music by Tchaikovsky featuring performances on-screen and in the soundtrack by violinist Tim Fain and a track of electronica dance music by English production duo The Chemical Brothers.
It marks the fifth consecutive collaboration between Aronofsky and English composer Clint Mansell , who composed the original score for the film.
Mansell attempted to score the film based on Tchaikovsky's ballet but with radical changes to the music. The Chemical Brothers' music, which is featured prominently during the club scene in Black Swan , is omitted from the soundtrack album.
Black Swan had its world premiere as the opening film at the 67th Venice Film Festival on September 1, It received a standing ovation whose length Variety said made it "one of the strongest Venice openers in recent memory".
Clooney is a wonderful actor, and he will always be welcome in Venice. But it was as simple as that. According to The Independent , the film was considered one of "the most highly anticipated" films of late The newspaper then compared it to the ballet film The Red Shoes in having "a nightmarish quality Black Swan had a limited release in select cities in North America on December 3, , in 18 theaters and was a surprise box office success.
The per location average was the second highest for the opening weekend of behind The King's Speech. The website's critical consensus reads, "Bracingly intense, passionate, and wildly melodramatic, Black Swan glides on Darren Aronofsky's bold direction—and a bravura performance from Natalie Portman.
In September , Entertainment Weekly reported that based on reviews from the film's screening at the Venice Film Festival, "[ Black Swan ] is already set to be one of the year's most love-it-or-hate-it movies.
Some found its theatricality maddening, but most declared themselves 'swept away'. Kurt Loder of Reason magazine called the film "wonderfully creepy", and wrote that "it's not entirely satisfying; but it's infused with the director's usual creative brio, and it has a great dark gleaming look.
Goodridge described Portman's performance, "[She] is captivating as Nina Goodridge praised Libatique's cinematography with the dance scenes and the psychologically "unnerving" scenes: "It's a mesmerising psychological ride that builds to a gloriously theatrical tragic finale as Nina attempts to deliver the perfect performance.
Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a mixed review. He wrote, "[ Black Swan ] is an instant guilty pleasure, a gorgeously shot, visually complex film whose badness is what's so good about it.
You might howl at the sheer audacity of mixing mental illness with the body-fatiguing, mind-numbing rigors of ballet, but its lurid imagery and a hellcat competition between two rival dancers is pretty irresistible.
The critic said of the thematic mashup, "Aronofsky The film has been criticized for its portrayal of ballet and ballet dancers.
Rojo called the film "lazy It doesn't show why ballet is so important to us — why we would want to try so hard. Amy Westcott is credited as the costume designer and received several award nominations.
A publicized controversy arose regarding the question of who had designed 40 ballet costumes for Portman and the dancers. An article in the British newspaper The Independent suggested those costumes had actually been created by Rodarte 's Kate and Laura Mulleavy.
Furthermore, the corps ballet's costumes were designed by Zack Brown for the American Ballet Theatre , and slightly adapted by Westcott and her costume design department.
Westcott said: "Controversy is too complimentary a word for two people using their considerable self-publicising resources to loudly complain about their credit once they realized how good the film is.
We know that Natalie Portman studied ballet as a kid and had a year of intensive training for the film, but that doesn't add up to being a ballerina.
However, it seems that many people believe that Portman did her own dancing in Black Swan. Black Swan appeared on many critics' top ten lists of and is frequently considered to be one of the best films of the year.
